Miriam Villani Presents Awards to the Winners of the 31st Annual Professor William R. Ginsberg Memorial Essay Contest

Miriam Villani, a Partner with the Firm and a Member of the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) Environmental & Energy Law Section Executive Committee, was the presenter at the 31st Annual Professor William R. Ginsberg Memorial Essay Contest awards ceremony, which took place at the NYSBA’s fall meeting at the Emerson Resort and Spa in Mt. Tremper, New York.

The Professor William R. Ginsberg Memorial Essay Contest is an annual competition designed to challenge law students to analyze the environmental issues confronting our world today. Two first-place winners shared the $1,000 prize and will have their essays published in an upcoming edition of The New York Environmental Lawyer (TNYEL), of which Ms. Villani is the editor. The winning essays were as follows:

  • “Compelling the EPA to Regulate GHG Emissions Under the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships” by Sarah Kam, Columbia Law School

  • “Reaching the Individual: A Proposed Federal Framework to Reduce Community-Based Greenhouse Gas Emissions” by Rachel Manning, Fordham University School of Law

Two second-place winners shared the $500 prize and will have their essays considered for publication in TNYEL. The essays were:

  • “Microgrids: Legal and Regulatory Hurdles for a More Resilient Energy Infrastructure” by Raquel Parks of Pace Law School

  • “State Autonomy and the National Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program” by Anthony Raduazo, Columbia Law School

The third-place winner received $250 and will have his essay considered for publication in TNYEL. The award went to Robert Reagan of Pace Law School, whose essay was titled “The War on Coal is Over: Assessing Obama-Era Regulations and the Trump Administration’s Efforts to Date.”
